I’m excited to announce a whole new section of our Yoga on Demand Video Library – Contraindications in Yoga!
A contraindication in yoga refers to anything (technique, movement, position) which would be dangerous for someone with a certain type of condition. In the case of a hip replacement surgery, there are certain yogic postures which have the potential to damage or dislocate a newly replaced hip, and in the worse case scenario, even lead to the need for the surgery to be redone. On the other hand, there are other yogic techniques that would be highly beneficial in supporting the healing process after surgery.
Hip replacement surgery contraindications are one of the more difficult topics to find quality information on for both students and teachers alike. There is a lot of confusion about what is and isn’t productive, and students looking to get moving after surgery are often left feeling confused and worried. The reason for this is because there are multiple types of joints available which use different materials, and there are many different ways a surgeon might choose to do the surgery. Where the incision was and what kind of a joint you have are the main determining factors of what your contraindications are, and there are generally two categories with very different needs. In fact, the contraindications are exactly opposite for each! That’s right! You could have two people with hip replacements in the same yoga class and their rules of what they should and shouldn’t do could be exact opposite! Being properly informed is the key to a safe and successful rehabilitation.
In this video we go over the 5 most important questions you need to ask before returning to yoga after a hip replacement surgery. We discuss the types of joints and surgeries to help you assess what the correct approach is, and then offer a section that covers each of the categories. Learn what actions and poses to avoid, what to substitute them with in a class, and what poses will add benefit in aiding the rehabilitation process. With the info in this video, you can feel confident to get back into your practice knowing how to keep yourself safe in any yoga class you choose to attend!
For my yoga teacher friends out there, this is everything you need to know to help safely support students returning to class after a hip replacement surgery, and will help you know how to adapt your class plan to accommodate these kinds of injuries easily and seamlessly.
Stay tuned! I’ll be covering other injury and health condition contraindications in upcoming new videos in this educational series!
